9:05 China Market: Safety of Battery Cells and Systems - from the Carmaker's Point of View

Heinz-Willi Vassen, Director, C/EE Development Electric/Electronics, Audi (China) Enterprise Management Co., Ltd.

China is still the main driver in the field of NEV. The new energy vehicle market in China is increasing again, even under the impact of reduced Subsidies. Chinese Cell Manufacturer are already well established and will soon deliver also to international automakers for overseas business. Higher Battery Energy Density is still one of the hot topics for China market. With fast changes in electrode materials and – as a consequence - challenges for safety. Now LFP seems to come back alternative to NCM. The presentation will focus on the latest development and on regulations / requirements for China NEV market. It will present technical concepts and future trends. Taking safety as top priority.

Mike O’Kronley, Executive Director - Corporate Strategy, A123 Systems

Recent changes in China’s NEV policy have influenced consumers buying decisions on xEVs and the batteries that power them. This presentation will focus on recent policy changes in China and the resulting impact they have had on xEV batteries.

Wenzel Prochazka, Manager, Battery Benchmarking Program, AVL List GmbH

The program provides a database for objective comparison in technical attributes in engineering methodology with market competitors for clear system target definition of high performing, reliable and safe batteries. 270 different criteria are evaluated through AVL benchmarking metrics grouped in 8 high level attributes. The integrated system performance values in cell, mechanical and electrical system are pointed out to support development programs. With a special focus on safety systems three exemplary vehicles are compared, the Tesla Model 3, Nio ES8 and Audi etron.

Sachiya Inagaki, General Manager & Seoul Branch Office Manager, Yano Research Institute Ltd

Demand of LiB cell and its material is increasing a lot recently, thanks to expansion of xEV market. However, this demand is based on government policy and subsidies and it is difficult to say that generally, people do not want to have an EV because EVs have less merits to buy in comparison to existing ICEs. Then, there should be a variety of vehicles which utilize characteristics of EV and its material also should be diversified. We will propose such kind of material strategy based on our forecast of the EV market.

Craig Rigby, Vice President Technology, Power Solutions, Clarios (formerly Johnson Controls)

As automotive electrification strategies continue to evolve, multi-battery systems that include a lithium-ion battery paired with a 12-volt battery are becoming commonplace. While much of the attention is focused on 48-volt or high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, the role of the 12-volt battery in this system continues to be critical to vehicle operation. From basic vehicle functions to safety-critical power needs, this presentation will discuss the evolving requirements for 12-volt batteries in multi-battery systems and provide perspective on a portfolio of solutions.

Toyota has been developing fuel cell technology for over 25 years. We launched the first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle, the Toyota Mirai, in 2014 in Japan and 2015 in the US, and have now over 8,500 in operation worldwide. We are also working on the Sora bus and a medium-duty delivery truck in Japan, and a Class 8 heavy-duty truck in the US, among other activities. Fuel cells are a key technology for decarbonizing transportation and an early step to integrate hydrogen in a decarbonized economy as a whole.

We have applied our long experience with metallic Li anodes to replace sulfur with Li-ion cathodes such as NCM, NCA, and achieved 500 Wh/kg, 1000 Wh/L with long cycle life and outstanding safety. We have a technology roadmap to achieve 630 Wh/kg, 1300 Wh/L.

Takuya Saeki, Application Engineer, Battery Applications, Siemens PLM Software

Physically developing and performing trials on new battery compositions and cooling strategies is an expensive and resource-intensive process that only large, funded organizations and laboratories have the facilities to perform successfully. We will address how simulation would assist in minimizing the research, analysis, and experiments to analyze the behavior of battery systems where there is need for strongly coupled resolution of flow, heat transfer, electrochemistry, and stress due to expansion and contraction during operation to provide the best possible prediction.
