Aapo Markkanen,
Principal Analyst, Machina Research

Aapo Markkanen is a Principal Analyst at Machina Research, where he studies various market and technology issues that will pave the way for, and shape up, tomorrow's connected enterprise. He has a particular research interest in low-power communication technologies (including e.g. LPWA networks and competing mesh-based alternatives), the evolution of IoT security, as well as fog/edge computing and the associated IoT gateways.   Before joining Machina Research, Aapo worked as a Principal Analyst at ABI Research, where he led a range of research activities related to M2M, Internet of Things, and big data. In this position, he explored areas such as data analytics, product lifecycle, cloud platforms, and IoT developers. He was also responsible for ABI Research's flagship forecast on the global installed base of connected devices.   Prior to ABI Research, Aapo worked as a Research Analyst at IHS, where he was tasked with providing market intelligence and strategic analysis on the European telecoms sector and its leading players. Previously, Aapo worked with a number of strategic consultancies, conducting research projects related to product lifecycle and industrial vehicles, amongst others.   Aapo has spoken and moderated at several conferences, as well as been widely quoted by business and technology media. His views and research findings have appeared, for example, in such leading outlets as AP, CNBC, CNET, Dow Jones, EE Times, Financial Times, MIT Technology Review, Reuters, TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Wall Street Journal, Wired, and ZDNet.   Aapo holds BSc and MSc degrees in management studies from the University of Tampere, Finland. He has also spent an academic year at the University of Bologna, Italy, where he attended courses in economics and politics.

Static Context Header Compression
The IETF LPWAN working group has decided to develop a new mechanism called Static Context Header Compression (SCHC). It combines the advantages of RoHC context which offers a great level of flexibility in the processing of fields, and 6LoWPAN behavior to elide fields that are known from the other side. Static context means that values in the context field do not change during the transmission, avoiding complex resynchronization mechanisms, incompatible with LPWAN characteristics.
