電池の工学技術には、活性物質の性能を最大限発揮させるための電極やセルの設計、信頼性の高いセルの性能を保証するパックの設計、安全性や信頼性、耐久性を確保しつつさまざまな制約に対応しながら進められる電池パックの車両 (および他の機器) への統合といった重要な側面が含まれます。非活性成分の選択を含むセルの設計は、電池の性能と信頼性に大きく影響するものですが、電池パックの設計と統合は、熱工学や機械工学、電気工学の課題であり、セルの化学技術とはほとんど別個の問題と言えます。対応する用途分野での負荷サイクルを踏まえながらセルとパックを最適な形で設計するには、エネルギー、出力、製造性、耐誤用性、熱特性、コストのバランスを注意深く探っていく作業が必要です。
